If you have never been in a Christian bookstore, you are missing out! Browzing in one of the stores, I feel as if I have stepped back in time. Remember walking around the ole’ five and ten stores, from way back when? There was a little bit of everything for everyone. Most Christian bookstores offer a wide variety of merchandise. An offering from books for children to Christian spiritual gifts, with a wide range in between. I have found most of the bookstores still offer great customer service and good quality items.

Now, does anyone remember identification bracelets? Our granddaughter wanted one for Christmas one year. I could not find a nice one anywhere. At least, not until I visiited the local Christian bookstore. While I was there I just thought I would check out the jewelry. Not only were there ID bracelets, there were beautiful gold and silver crosses and watches. If you were wanted something more spiritual, there were also audio recordings of the Bible.

A great idea for a more spiritual Christian gift, try a board game based on Bible verses and knowledge. All kids love games and everyone can join in to learn something. It is a wonderful way to learn Bible verses without forcing the children to sit down and memorize. Nowadays, a lot of materials are also available in the form of video game. Nothing escapes the computer!

Of course, don’t forget that most Grandmother’s love all the plaques telling us what great Grandmother’s we are.
Around a corner you can find beautiful spiritual calendars with fascinating photos. Down the aisle, there will be a wide range of music. On the walls, you’ll find lots of Christian posters. Our grown son still asks for one of their T-shirts each year, for Christmas.

We cannot forget how many different Bibles are available. Do you want a study Bible that gives you the history of the Bible ? Do you want the original King James version or the NIV? How about a hardback versus the traditional leather ? You can pretty much pick the font, the color and size of the Bible you desire. It took me nearly an hour to choose the first Bible for one of our granddaughters. You see, she wanted an NIV with a purple cover.

I hope that you will be tempted to go and wander around one of the local Christian bookstores to take a step back in time. Check out the games that we all use to play and can still only be found in a few places. Personally, I like to purchase books that I can share with the grandchildren, to read to them over the phone. I buy them a copy of the book and I get a copy. That way, we can both see the pictures. Happy Shopping!

As Christmas approaches and we begin procuring gifts for family and friends, it’s sometimes difficult to know exactly what to give certain individuals. Spiritually inclined adults are often a challenge because you want to evoke in them their spirited passion for the true meaning of Christmas without over commercializing the sacred holiday.
Rest assured, however, that the perfect gift does exist. Here, we offer several for your consideration.
Inscribed Bibles - This is a no brainer. A Bible makes a great Christmas gift for any Christian, especially when the holy book is inscribed with the recipient’s name!
Inspirational Books - Old and New Testaments aside, a bevy of inspirational, motivational and interpretational books exist. Whether guiding the reader to reach new moral heights or exploring the historical facts of biblical times, these gifts are sure to pique interest.
Paintings - From a portrait of Jesus to a Thomas Kinkade print, artwork teeming with spirituality often has a place in the homes of the religiously inclined. If your recipient is into Thomas Kinkade, you don’t have to spend thousands on a canvas. Inexpensive prints as well as ancillary items such as lamps, plates, etc. are available featuring the artwork of "The Painter of Light."
Cross Pendants - The most enduring symbol of the Christian religion is the cross. While a crucifix is a great gift for many, a more subtle cross pendant may be more ideal. Whether penned to a blouse or worn on a necklace, these allow their bearers to keep the meaning of the cross close to their hearts at all times.
Religious Movies - From "The 10 Commandments" to "Passion of the Christ," a movie depicting biblical events is always a hit.
Christian Music - Today’s Christian music scene is more diverse than ever. Sure, traditional hymns are widely available. But Christian musicians now embrace all genres, including rap and rock. If you know your recipient’s musical tastes, there’s likely a Christian group that will fill their listening needs.
Charitable Contribution - The Christmas season is about many things. Chief among them are the values of charity, benevolence and compassion. Organizations from the Salvation Army to the International Red Cross do good work with the money gifted to them. If that hard-to-buy-for adult has everything, give them another type of gift: make a charitable contribution in their name. That’s a gift the both of you can feel good about!

Jewelry is a broad term that describes any ornamental adornment on the body. It includes toe rings to tiaras and everything in between. Jewelry has been used in every culture throughout history and in many different ways. While in our culture today jewelry serves mostly an aesthetic purpose, jewelry can serve other functions as well. Jewelry is used to represent social or official rank, age, marital status, and tribal affinity. In addition, jewelry serves as emblems of religious, social, and political affiliation. In fact, one of the very first uses of jewelry was to show religious affiliation. The following are the main cultures that began the use of religious jewelry and the common symbols and uses of their jewelry.
Egyptian Religious Jewelry
Religious jewelry in Ancient Egypt was very symbolic. Some common symbols in Ancient Egyptian religious jewelry include the scarab (beetle), lotus, serpent, falcon, and the eye. The scarab is a symbol for good luck and resurrection while the “Eye of the Horus” represents healing. A common symbol of the time called the “Ankh” is meant to represent eternal life. Religious jewelry was extravagant, consisting of gold and semi-precious stones and were worn by men and women alike. When the Roman Era arrived, Egyptian religious jewelry was made of cheaper materials and more Christian symbols were used. When Islam arrived in Egypt men were forbidden to wear gold jewelry. At this time silver jewelry became more popular in religious jewelry in Egypt. Religious jewelry is still widely used in Egypt, but does not have the same extravagance as the Ancient Egyptian religious jewelry.
Roman Christianity and Religious Jewelry
Art and architecture thrived when St. Constantine Christianized the Roman Empire. At this time several popular symbols were created that are still used in Christian art and jewelry. These symbols include the cross, the rosary, and the Christian fish charm. The cross is a symbol of God’s love and a reminder of Christ’s suffering. Rosary beads are prayer beads that began in the Roman Christian world but are now used predominately by the Catholic Church (officially accepted by the Catholic Church during the rosary approbation in 1520). Rosary beads are also used in the Islam and Buddhist faith. The Christian fish charm came about when early Christians would make an acronym with the Greek word for fish, “ichthys,” Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter (Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior). This symbol attracted less attention to the persecuted Christians. The Christian charm remains very popular today.
Native American Jewelry
Native American religious jewelry was a symbol for nature, played a role in religious ceremonies, and represented status. Natural materials were used in their jewelry including feathers along with minerals such as turquoise and metals like silver. These natural materials were a reminder of the Earth around them. During healing ceremonies and harvest rituals, the people would take care to wear specific kinds of religious jewelry that were the right color, made of the right materials, and representing the right symbol for that event. The jewelry that is worn by a person is representative of the different stages of life an individual has entered into. In several tribes adolescents are initiated into adulthood when they receive the spiritual totem consisting of shells, beads, or symbols from nature. Native American religious jewelry was also given to women after there first menses and to newly married couples. Religious jewelry has played a significant role in Native American culture.
Because our culture today uses jewelry mostly for decorative purposes we often forget the roots of jewelry and how, to some cultures, it can have a deeper spiritual meaning. Recognizing the importance of this religious jewelry in other cultures allows us to see the greater symbolic uses that jewelry can be used for.

Religious arts & crafts
Religious arts & crafts allow artisans and crafters the opportunity to showcase the symbols of their faith, and the opportunity to craft an expression of their faith into tangible form. In this manner, religious arts & crafts provide a way for the faithful to proudly acknowledge their beliefs, and profess their love for their god or gods. Religious arts & crafts usually do this by referring to their religion’s main textual tenants or predominant symbols.
Which religions use arts & crafts to express belief?
Religious arts & crafts, as commonly thought of in western society, is concerned primarily with Christianity. For this reason, the common symbols of Christianity – the cross, fish and loaves, angels, Jesus Christ, etc. – are commonly incorporated into American arts & crafts. Another popular theme is to incorporate scripture quotations. Of course, Christianity does not have a monopoly on religious arts & crafts; arts & crafts are well known within the Jewish tradition, for instance. Jewish arts & crafts typically focus on the most widespread symbols of Judaism, and include the Star of David, menorahs, and other icons of the belief. Jewish sayings are also frequently featured on Jewish arts & crafts.
Ideas for religious arts & crafts
Religious arts & crafts are designed to serve as decoration for one’s home, office, vehicle, or church. Although religious features could be showcased in virtually any type of arts & crafts, these are some popular ideas for religious arts & crafts used for decoration:
1. Beaded Crafts: With a set of beads and string, pipe cleaners or safety pins, the devotee can create cute, creative religious arts & crafts. The possibilities for these crafts are almost endless, and are great for the whole family. These beaded crafts can be designed as jewelry, decorations, and other adornments. Virtually any religious symbol is possible with this versatile craft idea, from the Star of David to the Shroud of Turin.
2. Paint Your Own: Try to let your creative side out and paint your religious items for decoration and display or even for use in a religious service. Special ceramic paints are great to use for painting, decorating, and personalizing ceramic crosses, angels, and even scenes from the Bible. Personalize these paintings with names, birthdays, and scripture to make wonderful personalized gifts.
3. Cross Stitch & Embroidery: While it may take more skill and expertise, with a bit of practice most devotees can become experts and creating needlework arts & crafts. Religious needlework is especially noteworthy as it can combine both graphical images of crosses, angels, doves, and Bible scenes, as well as scripture, Bible verses, and other words of inspiration. Some more popular options for religious arts & crafts using cross stitch and embroidery include religious pillows and Bible covers.
4. Stained Glass Arts & Suncatchers: Stained glass art is popular for religious arts & crafts since stained glass is usually associated with churches and places of worship. This does not mean that you need to be a church to afford stained glass art. Far from it, inexpensive stained glass kits are readily available in most hobby and craft stores, and can be used by those without any previous experience.
5. Ornaments & Window Hangers: Ornaments and window hangers are often quite simple to create – in the absence of specialized skills, all you need is some imagination and a dash of creativity. Ornaments may be designed specifically for the Christmas season, or may be year-round crafts that can be hung anywhere, even from your rearview mirror. Look on the Internet for some fun ideas for religious ornaments, hangers, and other crafts.
6. Handmade Jewelry: Most religious people will happily wear the symbols of their faith as a personal reminder of their faith and devotion. Handmade religious jewelry is very popular, and can include anything from resin angel earrings to homemade metal crucifixes. Brooches, necklaces, and bracelets are also very popular, and while they are generally designed for women, men are becoming increasingly comfortable wearing fine handmade crucifix necklaces.
Looking for resources for making religious arts & crafts
Many arts & crafts shows will feature quite a bit of religious crafts and artwork. While there are rarely shows designed specifically for this niche market, a very high percentage of artisans & crafters feature work that includes a religious focus. If you are not able to attend any shows, do not give up hope. When looking for other ideas for religious arts & crafts, head to your local Christian bookstore or specialty shop. These stores will almost always maintain special sections dedicated to arts & crafts supplies of a religious nature. These stores also typically have arts & crafts ready for purchase and gift giving. If you are more adventurous, go to a hobby and arts & crafts store and convert a secular hobby kit into a testament of your faith.

Whilst walking around the supermarket last weekend I noticed an ‘Easter gifts’ section had been installed at the end of the sweets and chocolate isle. Maybe this is not a new phenomenon, and I’ve just not noticed it before, but it looks to me as if we are now being encouraged to buy PRESENTS for each other at Easter!
When I was a lad, I was lucky to get a Cadburys cream egg or two costing 14p each, and one Large egg, costing somewhere between £1.49 and £2.49. I don’t remember this last year, perhaps I just missed it.
Admittedly, some of these items were quite cheap, like Stationary, Whistles ,Empty eggs, Cuddly rabbit toy. However, I just typed ‘Easter gift ideas’ into Google, and was presented with sites touting Easter gifts for between £14.99 and £40!
I’ve just read an article entitled ‘Chocolate-Free Easter Treats’ which suggests…
For boys - Soggs (6 pairs of socks in an egg carton), Foam Zoomer - £6 (the Easter connection is lost on me, if there is one!)
For girls - Easter Cross Stick Book marks, Denim Chick Hat, Percy Pig Egg Cup Set, Aroma Home Hot Hugs Bunny
So, to repeat my article title, is this consumerism gone too far Step too far, or is it s healthy alternative? I would appreciate feedback!
One Easter gift idea that I am happy to embrace is World Vision’s Gift of 20 Chicks - Greatgifts.org Providing families in Chettikulam, Sri Lanka with vaccinated chicks will produce eggs and meat for them to eat or sell.
